Sublime Scents was started out of love and nessesity. With a love of candles, the earth and our family, we (Tommy and Samantha Johnson) started Sublime Scents from very little. After three, yes 3, layoffs between the two of us in only nine months, we knew that we had to do something to control our career “fate”, and take care of our two little princesses Miranda, 4 ½ and Tabitha, 10 months.

Tommy was laid off twice. Once in September 2008 where he was a Respiratory Account Manager (I was 8 months pregnant with our second daughter, Tabitha at the time) and again in August 2009 from another healthcare company. Tommy has spent almost 13 years in the Respiratory Industry and has seen the gamut of chronic and acute respiratory conditions.

I (Samantha) was laid off a Workers’ Comp Service Provider, in May 2009, only a few months after returning to work from Maternity leave. At my job, I was a Business Development Manager in Medical Sales and dealt with many cases in which a worker had developed a respiratory illness after being exposed to hazardous materials.

The economic climate is affecting everyone; and regardless of news reports; no industry, healthcare included, is safe.

We were taken aback by our new found situation, but knew that we had to take action. With Tommy’s knowledge and experience in the respiratory industry, we knew how difficult it was for people with any level of breathing conditions to enjoy candles or home fragrance. After investigating Paraffin Wax (hyperlink to Paraffin page), we were shocked to discover the dark under-belly to its bright glow and the serious health hazards that its use poses.

We wanted to provide people with a natural, non-toxic candle option that even I would feel comfortable burning around my small children. This is how we came to discover the many benefits of Soy Wax (hyperlink to Why Soy?). It is natural, a renewable resource, supports American Soy Farmers, and best of all - releases no toxins into the air when burned.
